Hello -
I’m Malik,
a designer and photographer based in Silver Spring, MD.  My work engages culture, community, and limitlessness with bold graphics and an animated vocabulary. My design process starts with research and writing, followed by iterative typographic and image-making explorations that  synthesize my findings. In contrast, my photography practice is intuitive and natural, balancing methodologies to tell stories, save the moment, and create form.

Daps and Pounds: Dignity and Pride

Daps and Pounds is a book that celebrates dap, a salutatory gesture originating from Black Vietnam War veterans. Over the past half-century, dap has spread beyond black communities and across the globe. The book opens w/ a series of layout exercises, then gets into the history of dap, followed by a study on nonverbal communication, typographic explorations, and finally closes with an article about the future dap.
This project was started in my second semester of graduate school, before the COVID-19 pandemic, and was finished during my time in isolation from March-May of 2020. Daps and Pounds is a relic of distant and recent histories as the nature of physical touch between humans has changed right in front of our eyes.
