Hello -
I’m Malik,
a designer and photographer based in Silver Spring, MD.  My work engages culture, community, and limitlessness with bold graphics and an animated vocabulary. My design process starts with research and writing, followed by iterative typographic and image-making explorations that  synthesize my findings. In contrast, my photography practice is intuitive and natural, balancing methodologies to tell stories, save the moment, and create form.

Sapphaus Modular Type Experiment

This past Summer, I had the privilege of visiting the Bauhaus as a part of a month-long Study Abroad program through Europe. Our trip started in Dessau, where we stayed in the OG Bauhaus dorms for about a week. Additionally, we got to check out the Bauhaus Museum, where I became familiar with a  type specimen by Joseph Albers. From 1923 Albers worked on a ton of modular type experiments with glass lettering and wood. He received a registered design patent for this particular idea. The typeface Albers created features a foundation of geometric elements: squares, circles, and triangles (which were actually quarter circles / a right triangle with a curved hypotenuse). By stacking these components together, he developed a san-serif lettering system designed to be used as stencils for posters and signs.

This type specimen inspired me to do my own modular experiments with the same foundational elements. I constrained my explorations to a 2-wide by 8-long grid and overlayed black and white pieces to create the glyphs. The letter set and system were designed entirely during my stay at the Bauhaus, with the numbers being added right after I returned to the states.

An OTF of this typeface is available by request.
