Rosart Type Specimen
Type Designer: Katharina Köhler
Foundry: Camelot Typefaces
This type specimen functions both as a book and a poster. Katharina Köhler designed Rosart in 2011 as an ECAL, Lausanne graduate student. In the final year of her Art Direction / Type Design program, Köhler was inspired by the work of steel punchcutters Jacques-François Rosart and Johann Fleischman, specifically a type specimen from 1768. The Rosart Typeface is an homage to them and the other type designers and punchcutters of the Transitional era. Köhler published Rosart in 2016 under Camelot Typefaces, a foundry she established with Maurice Göldner and Wolfgang Schwärzler.
Rosart is a serif typeface with multiple contrasting elements that achieve a dynamic harmony of personality and dignity. The curves are subtle yet expressive. The points are sharp yet polite. Köhler's approach and prolific execution in sampling/drawing from the old and updating its forms make this typeface a perfect balance of the past and the present.
